Apple Releases iOS 5.1.1

Apple just pushed out iOS 5.1.1, which includes:

  • Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the lock screen shortcut
  • Addresses Bug that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
  • Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
  • Fixes an issue where “Unable to purchase” alert could be displayed after a successful purchase

The update is about for 42.1 MB for the iPad 2 Wi-Fi only, but it may differ depending on your device. The only bug I had an issue with is the last one where it shows the unable to purchase alert, even though the app was purchased successfully.  Tell me what bugs you have had issues with on twitter! @nolanss

(UPDATE: The 5.1.1 update is around 42.5MB for the 3rd generation iPad, and about 54.5MB for the iPhone 4S.)

Will A Device Ever “Kill” The iPhone?

Most every time that a new phone comes out, someone speculates that it will kill the iPhone. The only problem- that has happened around 200 times, and what phone are you still using; oh, did you say an iPhone, thought so. Right now people are saying that the HTC One X and Galaxy S3 will kill the iPhone. Most of these people are journalists who are usually nerds. I am not saying that being a nerd is a bad thing, I am probably a bigger nerd than most of them. I think that Apple has too much good will setup for most people to leave their iPhones. They just work. Android, isn’t just the same.

I have used, and purchased many different phones, but I almost always come back to iOS. The only phone that I would actually considering keeping would be the Galaxy Note. The Samsung Galaxy S III looks like it is a great phone, just not for the mainstream. I am not going to say that it isn’t good, because that would be insanely bias, but I will say what I think when I have used it for a few weeks.

So what do you think, will a phone ever kill the iPhone? Send me a reply on Twitter!: @makuch2012.

Samsung Announces Galaxy S III!

Today at Samsung’s large press event in London, the Galaxy S3 was released. This phone has been anticipated for many months, and has many of the rumored specs. With Android Ice Cream Sandwich, an HD display, this phone is comparable, or better than the HTC One X.

The phone has a huge 4.8-inch HD AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 1280×720. It has the rumored Samsung Exynos quad core processor, and an 8MP camera, with a 1.9MP front camera. It has a full 1GB of RAM, which seems to be the standard for phones these days. It will have Google’s own Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with the TouchWiz UI, styling both the camera app, and the new voice commands. It also has a 2,100mah battery, which is indeed removable.

The phone will be available in either blue or white.

The phone has a revamped version of Android Beam named S Beam, to enhance it greatly. It will allow a user to send a song in two seconds, or a 10GB file in 3 minutes. The max speed with this service is 300Mbps, around 30X faster than the average home internet connection!

S-Voice Recognition is much like Siri, allowing you to send texts, emails, check the weather, and place phone calls. It will also let you sleep your device. While we think these features are a nice addition, no voice recognition will ever really rival Siri.

The phone will have either 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of storage with a Micro-SD card slot. This rivals the iPhone 4S, but takes the cake with the SD card slot.

Much like the HTC One X, the camera will have no shutter lag, and will include extra features. These features include being able to match a photo of someone with their Facebook profile picture.

The Samsung Galaxy S III will be availiable on May 29th in Europe, the 30th in the UK, and will hit 4G LTE on US, Japanese, and Korean carriers sometime in June. We will be trying our best to get an import to use on T-Mobile, or we will get one on Verizon some time in June/July.

So are you excited for the S3? If you are, drop me your favorite feature on Twitter!: @makuch2012.

Apple Killing Off The 17″ MacBook Pro?

The MacBook Pro is by far Apples most successful computer. But the 17″ hasn’t been doing to great recently. The 13″ was sold 1.5 million times last quarter, and the 15″ was sold around 500,000 times. But the 17″ was sold only 50,000 times. The computer is a $500 upgrade from the same specs on the 15″. The 17″ doesn’t pull in enough revenue for Apple, so it makes sense they would kill it off. Leave me a reply on twitter with what you think: @makuch2012!

App Store hits 25 Billion Downloads!

Well, the challenge is over.  The Apple App Store has gotten 25 billion downloads.  This is really amazing, as the App Store started less than 4 years ago.  On January 11th, just over a year ago, the App Store only had 10 billion downloads.  As of December of 2011, the App Store is worth $7.08 billion.  Wow.

Well, in honor of the App Store, today’s question is: what is your favorite app?  Tweet it to us! @contemputech!

Building Windows 8

(By the way, this tweet ins’t a screenshot. It is actually an interactive tweet!)

This is major progress considering the mess with vista a few years back. It has only been 24 hours, so I would expect 3 million quite soon. While lots of things are still in beta, Windows 8 has been attracting tons of attention because of the Metro UI. I can’t wait to see what it looks like on tablets. Will it be a disaster, or will it be cool? Not many people have been this excited about Windows for a very, very, long time.
